Tommy Kleyn was tired of seeing trash along the otherwise beautiful river bank he passed on the way to work each day, so he took things into his own hands. The Netherlands-based artist decided to pick up trash one day.

No, he was not forced but he just felt like he had to. “Everyday, I ride my bicycle to work along the river bank. It’s a nice route to ride, except for one part. A stretch of the river bank is covered in plastic bottles and other pieces of (mainly) plastic trash,” he says. “The trash annoyed me very much, so, I decided to start picking them up. It took me about 30 minutes to fill one garbage bag with trash. But, one bag doesn’t really make a dent in an area as polluted as this. I vowed to fill one bag of trash each day I passed the spot.”

Tommy shared the initiative with his friends on Facebook and his friend Rick started helping him out. It was more fun together. The location was next to a bike path, and quite a few people got off their bikes and said what a great initiative this was. It was very motivating. “The idea is to motivate people to fill one garbage bag with litter each year. It only takes 30 minutes, it really makes a difference and you will be amazed about how good you’ll feel afterwards.”

‘Everything you buy is rubbish’ initiative got interested and they created indestructible snickers out of plastic bottles, balls and tanks. The creators assure that these stylish shoes will last for decades.
